There may be no difference at all!
This question occurred to me after sampling some brie cheese today. Although a fond aficionado of camembert cheese, I had never tried Brie cheese before. So I decided to buy myself some brie cheese to taste.
The first thing that came to my mind after consuming it was that it felt, tasted & looked the exact same as camembert cheese. So I was intrigued to find the difference.
Amazingly it turns outs that they are basically the same in most instances. Some factories even make it EXACTLY the same, but with a different shape. Apart from those factories however, whilist camembert contains only Penicillium camemberti, brie has Penicillium camemberti, Brevibacterium linens and some other micro-organisms.
Do these long words mean anything to the actual flavour of the cheese? Well yes. Brie procures to maturity faster and is slightly creamier according to some. It also has a more distinct flavour.
Cheese connoisseurs who can get their hands a hold of traditionally-made French cheese will also be able to taste another difference. Brie has a mushroomy taste, whereas camembert is sweeter and nuttier in flavour.
So in conclusion, buy brie cheese if it’s the same price.
